What is inequality? Which side of the spectrum do we fall on?

I am not here to speak on Communism. Because I haven’t even scratched the surface to understand the basics. But I am making an attempt to portray inequality and its effects without touching upon communism. Let us first define the term “Inequality”. For that I am making an assumption that only 2 people are there. If one person has access to all the basic necessities and rights wherein the other person does not have access to his fundamental rights and necessities then we say there exists an inequality. Extrapolating the definition to match the population of the whole of India, here is always a group of people who are deprived of basic necessities and fundamental rights whereas others get to enjoy them. Leave alone the luxuries, they are always skewed but availability and accessibility of resources to fulfil their basic needs and necessities is skewed then fundamentally we are doing the process wrong.

This puts us on course to define what are necessities, shelter, food and dress are the primary necessities. With new diseases and strains of viruses being identified, no one is safe from the impact of such viruses and diseases (we just saw the impact of COVID 19). So safety and healthcare to protect from those viruses and diseases also form the part of basic necessities. Think of a situation where differentiation is made based on the amount that one can spend to afford healthcare is scary because a virus or a particular disease will not affect only the people who are able to spend to protect themselves from such diseases. So the purview of basic necessities are food, shelter, dress, accessible and affordable healthcare.

I am happy, and also mentioned in one of the previou blogs that healthcare has become accessible. That is, healthcare technology and methodologies are available to everyone’s reach except for the fact that it is not affordable for everyone. I am a strong believer in the fact that are nation is developing and also is working in bridging the gap between affordability and accessibility. But on an immediate note will it be possible to bring a change? I suppose the answer is sustainable change always takes place over a long horizon. Until then, what about the patients who are not able to afford for their treatments? That is where we Caring Souls Foundation, an NGO from Uttar Pradesh specialising in raising funds to treat patients who are suffering from cancer come into the picture. We also have limited capacity and that is the reason why we are limiting ourselves to particular disease tranch and trying to improve the lie of people who come under our purview. We have started a 50 rupees campaign for achieving the same. And request you, your family members and your friends to contribute 50 rupees towards the cause of alleviating the pain of cancer patients. I have done my part and want to see how you guys bring forth a start in the process of long time sustainable change.
